“Advertising posters”

During the 1890s, at the height of this craze dedicated to the design of advertising posters, Victor LEYDET produced several posters evoking everyday life, simple gestures and familiar objects. In 1903, he had the second prize of the competition of artistic posters for the “BYRRH”.(1)

“Realism, vector of a new Humanism”

In his religious paintings as in his genre scenes, Victor LEYDET immobilizes this present reality. He chooses the same type of character from the people or the petty bourgeoisie. His palette of deep blacks contrasting with luminous whites, underlines the realism of the faces and gives his works an austere grandeur borrowed from a feeling of meditation (1).

As for some of his portraits, they reach a knowledge of the human soul,
a dazzling mastery of the brush. What interests him, what he seeks to express is the inner aspect of the human personality, its mystery (1).

Here is a remarkable portrait of a child where all the painter’s qualities come together: spontaneity, innocence and depth of gaze, modeled face, curly hair, realism of the fabric, perfection of detail, warm depth of the palette (1).
